Note from Obituary of Robert McKenzie: Although a joiner by trade, at the age of 18 years and 4 months, he enlisted into the Scots Fusiliers at Wick. During his career he served 18 months in the Crimean War and spent 3 years at Victoria Barracks at Montreal, Canada. Docking at St Johns, New Brunswick in 1862, it took nearly two months travel through blizzards and heavy snow before the Fusiliers took up their tour of duty. He returned to London in Oct 1864 and married Sophia Watling on 1 Jun 1865. He retired on 3 Mar 1868 after nearly 22 years service, having reached the ranks of Colour Sergeant. He retired to Southwold Suffolk where he ran the Southwold Arms Hotel and Public House. In the 28 years that he ran the hostelry he never spent one night away from home. He lived the remainder of his days at Mizpah Villa, 31 Station Road Southwold.
