Book called History of Raynes Park states that Richard Thornton had an irregular establishment, and she was the product of this. When she married Alfred Pulford, she gave the name of the father on the certificate as Richard Thornton.

447 Charles babtised illigitamate son of Emma in 1881, but was with her parents family in the 1881 census and was maked as their son. There is only one Charles born in the GRO for that period that is not otherwise accounted for and there was only one babtism in Mettingham.
Charles was accepted into the marriage to George Bird.and was called Charles Bird in the 1891 census retrns. Although he takes the name Pulford in the 1901 Census.
